| Drill Hall conversion could start
May 2008 |
 |
| Carrick planners have accepted Merlin
Cinemas' plan for a change of use of the former Drill
Hall in Berkeley Vale (just off The Moor) after conservation
officers' concerns had caused the project to be delayed.
The hall is a Grade II listed building and the plans are
subject to consultations. The building is greatly in need
of repair with obvious signs of neglect but the appearance
of the exterior will remain mainly unaltere after renovation.

| Hopefully Falmouth's much-needed cinema complex which
has been designed with FIVE SCREENS, two bar
/ restaurant areas and a retail outlet will progress quickly.
The main screen would seat 162 with others varying between 115 and
30. The plans can be viewed here (PA02/2182/07/B)..

| A planning application was originally made on 24th
October, 2007, by Roger Geddes Associates on behalf of Merlin Cinemas,
to turn the old Drill Hall in Falmouth into a multi-screen cinema.
The company who run cinemas across Devon and Cornwall are enthusiastic
about the prospect of the new Falmouth venture. |
 |
| Speaking for Merlin, Mr Geoff Greaves said "We
are excited about securing the Drill Hall and bringing a multi-screen
cinema to Falmouth. The building is a tardis and I believe we can
deliver a high quality cinema in the internal space whilst giving
this historic building a new lease of life and purpose." |
 |
| Mr Greaves continued: "Falmouth is a great town
and the Drill Hall a wonderful location, hopefully it will not be
too long before local people have a wide choice of films available
to them without the need to travel far." With regard to the schedule
of the development he said: "Subject to approval of the plans
we hope to start the conversion during May this year." |
 |
| The building has a considerable history dating back
to 1870s. It was bought by L2 nightclub owner, Tim Vigus, in 2004,
who planned to convert it into a £1.5 million live music venue
and nightclub. Nearby residents formed a petition against the plans
and Mr Vigus decided not to go through with the plans. Recently it
has been used as a second-hand market. |

| There may be some who will argue
that the revamped Falmouth Arts Centre is a perfect venue for those
who wish to attend film screenings in the town, but surely the Arts
Centre will cater for a different audience. Granted there will be
an overlap of those who wish to see up-to-date mainstream blockbusters
and also arts films. The proposed new cinema would have a very different
"Forthcoming Films" listing than the Arts Centre. |
 |
Surely both can survive (see
Falmouth's Cinema History) especially now with the influx of
students into Penryn and Falmouth. There is a need for a dedicated
cinema screening different films at different times of the day ...
seven days a week! It may also be foreseen that giving the young
folk of the town this new venue it will create a new audience for
Arts Centre in years to come. |

| On Wednesday, 7th April, 2004, Carrick
District Council Planning Committee rejected proposals for a development
which included a 400-seater cinema on grounds which would appear
to be insubstantial. A proposal was put forward to defer the plans
to allow further consultation with local councillors, but this was
also rejected. |
| |
| Among the concerns were Parking
(a previous plan for an 800-seater cinema had been agreed!); Residential
Units too close to Events Square (the square was made in
an already residential area, plus residential units are already
in place within the Maritime development; The
Size of the building is too big (the planners did increase
slightly on the original plans); the cinema being on the Ground
Floor (the technical consultants would not guarantee the
quality of sound within the auditorium if it were constructed on
the first floor). |
| |
| The developers had spent nine months
and over £50,000 trying to make this project viable. This
included time spent in consultations with the planners who did voice
some concerns but never dismissed the development. |
